Despre carte:

Guy de Pourtalès (1881-1941) is one of Switzerland’s most important French-language writers. Born in Berlin, he spent his childhood in Switzerland, then returned to Germany to study music at the University of Bonn. Settling in Paris, he joined the French army during the First World War, where he worked as a translator. This pendulum swing between the great European cultures (he also translated several Shakespeare plays into French) made him a cosmopolitan, and his literature, though marked by a love of Switzerland, refuses provincialism. He made his debut in 1910 with the novel La Cendre et la Flamme, then went on to publish both volumes of fiction and biographies of great musicians (of which Berlioz’s was translated into Romanian). His best-known book is La Pêche miraculeuse (1937), which won him the French Academy’s grand prize for the novel, has been reprinted and translated into several languages, and has also been filmed.

Largely autobiographical, Miraculous Fishing is the novel of an era and an impossible love. Geneva at the turn of the century is shaken by the outbreak of the First World War, which will cause the collapse of the old social order. In the midst of this historical tableau, a young pianist from a ruined family falls madly in love with a woman forced to marry a rich man. Through this whirlwind of war, music and love, the hero will rise to a new beginning, like the new world that is born after the conflagration.
