The Meridian illustrates a way of talking about poetry that substitutes itself for the object itself, where the effort to describe a creative path is confused with creation, whose implicit dialogical openness to indefinite spaces (Leerstellen) and incompatible with the rigorous sententiousness, bordering on the Definitive, of the theoretical exposition emanates from a glass bead game of language. Preferring meta-aesthetic speculation about the poem and its products to empathy with the latter, Celan tries to transpose it into an idiom bent on its own resources of access to the moment, however ephemeral, of the virtual coagulation, in language, of the encounter with the Other.
We have tried to take into account in this enterprise of translating Paul Celan’s prose into Romanian all the experience accumulated by translators who, in other languages and cultures, have initiated it long before us. We faced the same difficulties and dilemmas in finding a suitable equivalent to the density of the texts, accumulated in the palette of registers that slide from the ceremonious to the ironic and from the emphatic to the pathetic, in the intertextual reverberation, in the alternation between said and unspoken, in the semantic preaplin that emerges from the work of reshaping the lexical matter, and not only… (Andrei Corbea)
