Paul Hansen is serving a two-year sentence in a Montreal jail, where he shares a cell with Patrick Horton, a Hell’s Angel incarcerated for murder. Back in time: Hansen is superintendent of L’Excelsior, a building where he uses his talents as a porter, nurse, gardener, factotum and – more than that – confessor and comforter of the suffering. When he’s not busy helping the residents of L’Excelsior or maintaining the building, he joins Winona, his partner who, at the handle of her plane, carries him high into the sky above the clouds. But soon everything changes. A new manager is elected at L’Excelsior, and conflicts begin to arise. And the inevitable happens.
A church overrun by sands, an asbestos mine, the meanders of a silvery river, the sonorous waves of an organ make up the various landscapes in which this novel takes place. Each with its own story is one of Jean-Paul Dubois’s most beautiful books. We discover a writer animated by an acute sense of brotherhood and a feeling of revolt against all forms of injustice.
Each with his own story is a melancholic and luminous novel. All the elements that reveal Jean-Paul Dubois’s vision of the world are to be found in the book: family, the city of Toulouse, Canada, nature, melancholy, zephyr and his irresistible humour. – Le Figaro
Dubois has humanity deeply rooted in his soul, but he is under no illusions. […] This is why his cocktail of humour, intelligence and emotion, served with a falsely casual elegance, is once again so successful. – BibliObs
Jean-Paul Dubois’s latest novel, full of tender desperation, leaves a sweet impression of irresistible charm – Culturebox
