Ji Chang asked Gan Ying where his bow was.
– Bow? What bow? the old master replied, laughing. As long as you need the bow and arrow you still shoot the bow. When you shoot the bow without the bow, you don’t need the bow and arrow. Just then, high in the sky, a hawk was flying smoothly. It was so far away, it looked like a sesame seed. Gan Ying watched it for a while, then eyed it, gesturing to put an arrow in the bow. Only he had neither bow nor arrow. Then he stretched the unseen bow to its fullest, like a full moon, and suddenly he released the arrow, also unseen. The lightning-struck hawk did not even have time to flap its wings and fell like a stone from the sky. Ji Chang was left stunned. For the first time, he saw with his own eyes the mastery of archery. – The archer without a bow

The pleasure of reading this volume will come from confronting the reader with simplicity in its most refined form. How can so few words say so much? the reader will wonder. Nothing is harder than to achieve the purity of the world by reducing its vastness to the size of a grain of wisdom. The life advice offered without pedantry, the calmness and assurance with which the master leads his interlocutor to the point of enlightenment, the subtle x-ray of human nature, the tenacity with which the will is cultivated to the point where the spirit comes to defeat the law of nature, the blurring of the reality-vision relationship, which generates narratives built on the mise en abîme effect, refined humour, sophisticated fable, stories like The Bowless Archer and The Crane of the Evening, which those who read them never forget – all these wonderful pages made me happy to think that, by translating them, I could make them available to others. – STEFAN LIICEANU
